چکیده

Proposed mechanisms include increased insulin resistance, development of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and direct infection of the pancreas by hepatitis C virus. However, the development of Type 1 diabetes mellitus is usually associated with interferon-α therapy for hepatitis C virus infection with development of anti-islet cell antibodies. The pathogenetic mechanisms underlying this autoimmune destruction of the pancreas are not completely understood. In this review the authors discuss hepatitis C virus and Type 1 diabetes, highlighting the role of interferon-α therapy in the development of Type 1 diabetes in hepatitis C virus-infected patients. The mechanisms of action of interferon-α related to the development of Type 1 diabetes in this patient population will also be discussed.

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus Associated with Pegylated Interferon-α Plus Ribavirin Treatment for Chronic Hepatitis C: Case Report and Literature Review
Combined pegylated interferon (PEG-IFN)+ribavirin (RBV) therapy has been used as a primary treatment for chronic hepatitis C. However, IFN-induced autoimmune disease, including type 1 diabetes mellitus, has been highlighted as one of the problems with this therapy. Here we report the case of a patient who developed type 1 diabetes mellitus during combined PEG-IFN+RBV therapy for hepatitis C but...
متن کاملVitiligo Complicating chronic Hepatitis B patients treated with α-Interferon (Report of two cases)
α-Interferon is an antiviral agent used in treatment of chronic hepatitis B. Triggering of the underlying autoimmune disease or exacerbation of pre-existing auto immune disease is documented with α-interferon, but there are few reports about occurrence of autoimmune disorders such as systemic lupus erythematosus, Vitiligo, hypo and hyperthyroidism after administration of α-interferon in the lit...
متن کاملAmantadine Plus Interferon-α Versus Interferon-α Monotherapy for the Treatment of Chronic Hepatitis-C Infection in β-Thalassemia Major Patients: A Randomized Double Blinded Pilot Study in Shiraz, Iran
Background: Hepatitis-C infection is a major problem in chronically transfused patients. We compared Interferon-α (INF-α) monotherapy with combination of INF-α and amantadine in the treatment of β-thalassemia major patients who were chronically infected with HCV.Materials and Methods: Forty six thalassemia major patients who were chronically infected with HCV were randomly divided into two grou...
متن کاملDiabetic Ketoacidosis Due to Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus Induced by Interferon Therapy for Chronic Hepatitis C During the Course of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis: Case Report
Interferon α (IFNα) has been reported to induce several autoimmune diseases, including autoimmune thyroiditis (AITD) and type 1 diabetes (T1D). In addition, co-occurrence of T1D and AITD is well known as one of the variants of the autoimmune polyglandular syndrome type 3. Meanwhile, there are no reports about the risk of development of IFN treatment-related T1D in patients with previously diagn...
متن کاملSAFETY AND EFFICACY OF INTERFERON ALFA FOR THE TREATMENT OF CHRONIC HEPATITIS C INFECTED SUBJECTS WITH TRANSFUSION DEPENDENT THALASSEMIA IN IRAN
Up to 30% of Iranian adult multi-transfused thalassemic patients are infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) which can intensify the progression of liver disease caused by iron overload in this group of patients. Our aim was to assess the biochemical and virological response of interferon alfa (INF-α) and its safety in thalassemic patients with chronic HCV infection. This trial was a single c...
